Day 1: Depart for Kairouan, the first Islamic capital in N. Africa. We walk the old medina, see the Great Mosque and Mausoleum of Sidi Saheb. To Sbeitla, Roman Sufeitula where we see the magnificent Capitoline Temple, baths, theater & Chrisitian baptisteries with mosaics in situ. Overnight in Sbeitla, overlooking the ruins. Day 2: To the ancient oasis town of Tozeur. Walk the old quarters, see the oasis & Dar Charait Ethnographic Museum. 1st night in Tozeur. Day 3: 4 Wheel Drive excursion to the Mountain Oases of Chebika, Mides & Tamerz. Afternoon at leisure. 2nd night in Tozeur. Day 4: To Degache, for a horse-carriage ride through the lush oasis. Cross the Salt Lake to Douz, the Gateway of the Sahara. Optional sunset excursion to the dunes by camel, dune buggy or ultralight. Overnight in Douz. Day 5: To El Djem, to see the magnficent Roman amphitheater, the Roman Villas (including Villa Africa) and fine collection of mosaics. Return to Hammamet or Tunis.
