We start this tour with the short drive to Kampong Thom Province, home to the ancient city complex of Sambor Prei Kuk. Sambor Prei Kuk is one of Cambodia’s oldest structures and boasts some impressive pre-Angkorian monuments. Built in the 7th century by king Isanavarman, there are more than 100 brick temples scattered deep in the forest to discover and explore. During the early 70’s Sambor Prei Kuk was heavily bombed by the US air force and some of the craters left behind from the bombings are still visible to this day. After exploring Sambor Prei Kuk, we will stop for a small break before making our way to Phnom Santok. Phnom Santok is located in koh Koh village and is around 17km south of Kampong Thom town. This ancient site nestles among 4 mountains: Phnom Srah Kmao, Phnom Penhum, Phnom Champa and Phnom Santok. On top of these mountains you will find many giant Buddha statues that were carved out of sandstone. Three of the Buddha statues are about reaching nirvana and are an impressive 10 meters in length. One of the main tourist attractions on the mountains is the 802 steps to the peak where the great lake Tonle sap and the surrounding rice fields and jungle can be observed.
