King Jayavarman II declared himself the king of kings on this ancient site, proclaiming the kingdom’s independence from Java in 802 AD. This act is believed to be the very foundation of the Khmer Empire and has great importance for the Khmer people. Making our way up the mountain we will arrive at Kbal Spean. Here we will find “The River of a Thousand Lingas”. The Stung Kbal Spean River carves its way through the dense jungle revealing some intricate carvings, which are carved into the riverbed and banks, the carvings are mostly Hindu and dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. Continuing our trek we will now climb the steep steps to the top of the mountain. Here we will find Preah Ang Thom Pagoda which houses the giant “Reclining Buddha” statue standing at an impressive 8 meters high. This giant statue is the largest of its kind in the whole of Cambodia and attracts many locals and tourists alike.
