A thousand years and more of the history of Dublin is contained within this walk. College Green was originally a Viking assembly place; it is now a busy crossroads with very little grass in sight. It faces Trinity College on one side and the former Houses of Parliament, now a major bank, on another. Built in 1731 and added to later, the Parliament house was the world’s first purpose-built two chamber parliament building. Dame Street has many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings. Chief among these is City Hall, built as the Royal Exchange in the late 18th century on what was once the site of a 14th century nunnery called St Mary del Dame which gave the street its name. Castle Street has the main entrance to Dublin Castle, seat of power and administrative centre of English rule for 700 years. Christchurch and St Patrick’s are Dublin’s 2 medieval cathedrals, within sight of each other.
