We start this tour with the short ride to Angkor Wat, the most famous of all the temples in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is a UNESCO archaeological site about 9KM from Siem Reap town. Built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, it took almost 30 years to construct. It was originally built as a Hindu temple, however by the end of the century it became a Buddhist temple. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. Continuing, we now head for Pre Rup Temple. Pre Rup was built by King Rajendravarman II in the 10th century and is around 1km south of East Mebon. The temples name translates to “turn the body” and it is believed that funerals were held at the temple. After stopping for a short break we will make our way to East Mebon Temple. This temple is built on a small artificial island in the middle of the Eastern Baray and was only accessible by boat during the Khmer Empire, the baray (lake) has long since dried up and is now accessible by foot. The temple was built during the 10th century by King Rajendravarman in honour of his parents. We continue this tour with the short trip to Ta Som Temple. Ta Som Temple was built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII and is the smallest temple in the Angkor complex consisting of just a single tower monument surrounded by 3 walls. The history of this temple is unclear but is believed that it was built in honour of the Kings teacher. After lunch, we will now head to Neak Pean Temple. This temple is also built on an artificial island in the middle of Jayatataka Baray. The name of the temple means “The Entwined Serpents” and was originally built for medical purposes in the second half of the 12th century. It is widely believed that bathing in the pools that surround the temple can cure diseases and ailments. We finish of this tour by visiting Preah Khan Temple. Preah Khan Temple was constructed on the site of king Jayavarman VII’s victory over the Chams who invaded in 1191 and the name literally means “Holy City of Victory” or “Royal Sword” the king built Preah Khan to honour is father as well as his victory over the invading Chams.
