Finland has an exciting history: Being part of Sweden for almost 700 years, then part of Russia as an Grand Duchy for 110 years, and finally as an independent country since 1917. This history has left its layers, and they can be seen in Helsinki , the capital of Finland. The military history of Helsinki is clearly visible in Suomenlinna, which is situated just off the coast of Helsinki.
Suomenlinna has had many names since it was built in 1748 by soldiers. This construction site was the biggest fortress site after Gibraltar, and was even called « The Gibraltar of the North ». First is was named as Sveaborg by the Swedish army forces, then it got a nickname « Viapori » from Finnish soldiers, then « Krepost Sveaborg » by the Russian soldiers, and now « Suomenlinna » as part of Helsinki.
This tour is a guided walking experience tour for groups to Unesco World Heritage site Suomenlinna.
We are authorized guides to the site by the Ehrensvärd Society, and we can lead groups in this stunningly beautiful and exciting Unesco Heritage Site.
