Overview

The Canal du Midi, in the shade of its hundred-year-old plane trees, connects the Garonne to the Mediterranean. It was built between 1667 and 1683 in order to promote trade and specifically that of wheat. The project of the canal was imagined by Pierre Paul Riquet but was completed by Vauban. It is comprised of canals and locks which stretch over 240 miles, some of which are true works of art and have been classified as a UNESCO world heritage sites since 1996. There are countless ways to discover the Canal du Midi and its surrounding villages : on foot, on a bicycle or a river boat.
