Croix-Rousse hill
Croix-Rousse, or « Red Cross » in English, is an ancient suburb which joined the city of Lyon during the 19th century. It became the « working hill » because of its numerous silk workers called « Canuts » during the 19th century, when Lyon was the centre of silk manufacture in Europe (oh no, in the World 🙂 ).
They marked the history of Lyon through numerous labor revolts.
The architecture of the buildings is representative of the silk activity, as well as the presence of numerous « traboules » which we will discover by going down the hill.
Today, Croix-Rousse is a popular district, with an exceptionnal market everyday, and in which settled down numerous artists and from where you can enjoy fantastics views over Lyon.
Possibility to add to this tour a visit of a silk workshop presenting old looms in a real silk worker apartment (if you are at least 5 persons)
History of the silk workers
Walk down through traboules
Market in the morning
– Metro Hénon, we will first discover one of the largest painted walls in Europe, le mur des Canuts.
– Then we will walk through the big market (if in the morning), the « belly of Lyon »
– Out-of-the-beaten-tracks itinerary : we will go down the hill through the famous traboules in which the silk workers passed everyday.
– When we will be down the hill, we will stop on the main square in front of the city hall and you’ll be able to go to a good restaurant and continue your day with the discovery of the fine arts museum or the peninsula.
Good physical condition because a lot of walking and many stairs downhill (alleyways). Better to visit in the morning.
